What is global education?

Global education is about the world.

It is teaching about issues that are important to all people, such as peace, war, human rights, the environment, oppression, feminism, and racism.

Monbusho says that schools should teach children to be global citizens. Monbusho specifically says that students should develop an active concern for the world's problems and they should promote peace and understanding.

Thus go the words of an astronaut looking at the Earth (quoted in the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games):

On the first and second days we pointed to our own countries. On the third and fourth days we pointed to our continents. But on the fifth day the only thing on our minds was the Earth, just one Earth…

Global Education is about encouraging a sense of responsibility, but it is also about empowering people to contribute and change things for the better.

Why teach Global Education in English classes?

We are teaching a foreign language so that the students can learn about and communicate with people form other countries. It is easy to use English to teach about the world, because English is a global language.

We can teach grammar and teach global education.

Finally, students become more interested in learning English:
  • The classes are interesting.
  • The students become interested in learning about foreign countries.
