Scavenger Hunt!

Scavenger Hunt!

How to cause mahem in your school and disclaim responsibility
Nothing is more fun than relaxing in a room by yourself while your kids run havoc through the school at your instigation. With the materials below, you can not only create a scavenger hunt for your elementary students, but also have them create one of their own.

* "Scavenger hunt" is "walk rally" (uooku rarii) in Japanese.

Here's how you do it:

First, create a scavenger hunt for your kids to do. Use the clue cards and templates below to create hints. Depending on your locale, you may need to write something nasty on the back of each card so curious people don't remove them before it's time (e.g., "Don't remove," or "Toranai de kudasai"). Then, post each hint at the appropriate place.

Second, when class/club begins, divide them into teams. Give each copies of the vocabulary posters, and explain that, as a team, they must memorize the pronunciation and meaning of all the words on the posters. They balk at this, but it's important to note that the team has to memorize the words, meaning that one individual is responsible for only a few words.

Third, explain the grammar: "Look (preposition) the (place)," as in, "Look under the sink." The Japanese is "(Place) no (preposition) mitte kudasai," or "Nagashi no shita mitte kudasai." Also, show them an example hint card (as above).
Fourth, explain the rules.

Fifth, give each team the first hint card, and let 'em go! (It takes them about one minute for each hint because they run.)
Finally, when they're done and found the candy or whatever prize was at the end of the course (you?), provide each team copies of the templates and hint cards, and have them make a scavenger hunt for another team using the checklist below. For ten clues, it will take them about 90 minutes to make, meaning you can continue the activity into the next class.

Have fun!
